About the family-chronicle and the Riebeling-ancestor homes
In the 'Gült - und Güterregister' (index of taxes for rented or
self owned Land) of the county Ziegenhain of the years 1360-1367 [1],
which only contains a few names, no Riebeling is still named. This also applies
to the list of 'Gülten und Renten' (list of taxes and rents) of 1448, payable
in the county Ziegenhain [2]. One of the oldest, up to now known
proof of the name Riebeling, is located in the index of the payable interests,
rents and 'Gülten' in the county Ziegenhain (with Treysa) of the year 1464
[3], in which the due on 'Rybelins Koden' in the village Czelle
(today: Zella) is shown (see also SCHOOF 1958). Within
the three years later prepared country-tax-register of the court Ziegenhain
[4] four taxable predecessors are contained, namely Rybelyn
der Alde in Czelle, Henne Rybelin in Loshausen and Hartmann
as well as Gele Rybelin in Ascherode.
Priest Ruetz (1968) came to the assumption "that the origin of the under
Zella named Riebeling will be rightly in Gungelshausen" after analysing
lists of those who were authorized to use the local forest in this time and
later wrote name-registers. The hint on Rybelins farm of 1464 and the simultaneous
appearance of the name in different, and nearby located villages lets suppose
that already at that time Riebelings in this area were resident since longer
time. The following copies of the two early documents about the name Riebeling
are originating from photocopies, which were made in one go with genealogical
researches by friendly authorization of the state archives Marburg.

Original and wordly extract of the 'Salbuch' (register of landownership and
rented land):
so blibet uff Rybelins Koden
(Hof) 1 Albus und uff Dönnichen(?)
von Hattenbach 32 Schilling.''

These are the interest rents and land-tax
that...(?) 'Czigenhain' are annually to pay at 'Walpury' (Mai 1st) and Michael
(September 29th)
Czelle
Item (just as) them of Czelle are giving 28 Albus to 'Maybede' (May-tax) / and
48 Albus to 'Herbistbede' (autumn-tax) / from that the 'Perner' (priest) and
the 'Altaristen' (Altar-priests) to Treysa had to get 3 1/2 guilders to 'testanat'
(bequeath) of the reign, so it
rests to Rybelins Koden (farm) 1 Albus
and to Dönnichen (?) from Hattenbach 32 Schilling.

It follows the names 'Henne Steynhart' and 'Smid Henne' in that recording
of the 'Salbuch'; family names often used for and in Gungelshausen.
In an list about the earnings of the cloister Haina, that was produced at
1532, by the state of 1526, by monks of the cloister who escaped the reformation
[5], a 'Hentze Ribel' from Gungelshausen appears with the fruit-interests
due (farm-tax) in the department Treysa. In the 'Salbuch' of city and department
Ziegenhain 1555 [6] the surname appears just five times in
the places Ziegenhain, Niedergrenzebach, Zella and Michelsberg.
In case of the untiring and meticulous
works of the priests Hütteroth and Ruetz as well as other members of the
family association much of our family-history was explored and documented until
back in that time. With numerous articles in the family-newspapers since 1930,
there should be named especially the publications about the parent-firms and
their decendants of the name Riebeling by priest Ruetz (1972) in the German
'Geschlechterbuch'.
From the five in the 'Geschlechterbuch' described ancestral homes out of
the Schwalmarea the already named ancestral home Riebeling 1 from Gungelshausen,
whos history could be traced back most extensive, has a special importance.
Many descendants just live today in the area of Ziegenhain, in the north and
south of the country 'Hessen' as well as in other countries of Germany and in
the U.S.A..
The ancestral home of 'Seigertshausen'
and 'Röllshausen' could be proved the first time at 1656 in Seigertshausen.
Descendants are still located in the local area today, furthermore in western
Germany and in the U.S.A. (Pennsylvania, Illinois, Californien as well as Oregon).
The ancestor of the third ancestral home of 'Dorheim-Schlierbach' appears
1749 as godfather for the first time in Dorheim. The descendants live today
mostly in the north of the country 'Hessen', at the rivers 'Lahn' and 'Main',
in the country 'Saarland', in the region 'Westerwald' and in the countrys North
Rhine-Westphalia as well as Mecklenburg.
The 'Caldern-Oberrosphe' Riebeling as fourth
ancestral home, also written Rübeling, begins with Bastian Rübling,
who was born about 1670 in 'Caldern'. A number of descendants are resident just
today at the area of Oberrosphe and in the region of the cities of Marburg and
Friedbergs.
The fifth ancestral home of the Rübeling
from 'Helsa-Trubenhausen', who had retained this in the earlier time more frequent
namespelling, appeared the first time at about 1720 in the village 'Harle',
near 'Wabern'. They especially had settled down near the mountain 'Meißner',
in other areas of the north and the east of the county 'Hessen', in Northern
Germany and in Thuringia.
In the 'Hessisches Geschlechterbuch 19' are contained only the ancestral
homes who were united in the family-association at the time of the publication
of the 'Geschlechterbuch'. Here, as Priest Ruetz (1972) investigated, you have
"quite different ancestral lines of Riebeling or Rübeling from the
Schwalm, whose connection among each other could not be determined surely, occasionally
it will hardly probable".
Meanwhile there is sixth Riebeling-ancestor
home from 'Niedergrenzebach' becoming member in the family-association. Their
progenitor came 1687 of 'Obergrenzebach', a nearby located village.
The ancestor Frederick Julian Daniel Riebeling of the Riebeling-ancestral
home in Australia, was born 1857 in Berlin. The contexts with Riebelings of
the Schwalm are presently in exploration. The finding and evaluation of further
archival Sources from most earliest time and the track down of possible connections
between the ancestral homes also will be in future times one of the main tasks
of our ancestral researches. Progress in the preparation of old documents and
improved possibilities of the access through electronic data processing in the
archives will facilitate such work.
It admittedly gives a number of families
with the name Riebeling, Rübeling or Riebling and as well Reibeling in
Germany and in America, who does not belongs to the family-association.
In the 19. Century long before the painters- and artists-colony in the village
'Worpswede' was founded, in the village Willingshausen a well known painter-colony
was established. Important works about the charming landscape were created here,
pictures about the very striking farmer-faces and their colorful official dress
and the rural life in this area. Also pictures of our predecessors, like for
example the bride-leader Johann Riebeling and Anne Kathrin Orth in the
festive traditional costumes or the picture of the Conductor Magnus Riebeling
from Willingshausen (GB p. 28) created by Gerhard von Reutern and the Communion-picture
with priest Konrad Riebeling from Merzhausen (GB p. 113) from Carl Bantzer.
Also known is the later originated, very impressive picture 'Dorfälteste'
(Village-oldest persons) from Walter Waentig, that shows the great-granddaughter
of Magnus Riebeling Elisabeth Ermel, born Riebeling (GB p. 32) from Willingshausen.
In case of his distinctive character-head Bernhard Rübeling (GB
p. 240) was painted by the artist 'Giebel'.
